One of the great things about 1Passwd is the multi-browser support. While I'm content to use Safari others have chosen Firefox, Camino, Flock, or Omniweb as their browser of choice. Lately we've received a bit of e-mail regarding the 1Passwd icon not being installed in Firefox and there does not appear to be one single solution for all cases. Therefore, I thought I would do a knowledge "dump" on the subject and cover all them here. So here is a list of solutions for getting the 1Passwd icon in added to Firefox.
1. Although 1Passwd works with Firefox 1.5 and later, we highly recommend that you use the most current version of Firefox. As it stands today the latest version of Firefox is 2.0.0.6. (Get Firefox Here)
2. If Firefox does not reside in the Applications folder, try moving it there. We have seen cases where having it in another folder can cause problems.
3. Sometimes the 1Passwd icon is installed in Firefox but is not being displayed on the toolbar. You can check this as follows:
Start Firefox
Click on the View Menu
Select Toolbars > Customize
If you see the the 1Passwd icon, simply drag and drop it on the tool bar. If not, proceed to Step 4.
Tip: If you prefer you can use the 1Passwd toolbar in addition to the icon by checking the box next to 1Passwd Toolbar
4. Install (Re-Install) the browser extension for Firefox. This is especially true if you installed Firefox after installing 1Passwd but it works in many other cases as well.
Load the main 1Passwd application and go to the Preferences. On the browsers tab you will see the following screen:
If the checkbox next to Firefox is not checked click on it to install the 1Passwd icon in Firefox
If the box is already checked, uncheck it and then check it again to force 1Passwd to re-install the browser extension for Firefox.
5. Create a new Profile in Firefox.
See Dave's previous blog entry for detailed instructions on do this.
6. In most cases, one of the solutions in Steps 1-5 should have the 1Passwd icon added to Firefox. If all those steps do not get the icon added and the 1Passwd installation is not corrupt, this step should resolve the issue. Remove Firefox and Support Files and Reinstall Firefox.
Start by dragging the Firefox icon from the Applications Folder to the trash.
Next, drag the Firefox folder found in Application Support folder to the trash. Here is the path to mine:
Note: Do not forget this second step as it is very important!
7. The 1Passwd installation may be corrupt. (Re-Install 1Passwd)
Start the main 1Passwd application and use Preferences to "Remove All" extensions. (See the screenshot in Step 4)
Drag the 1Passwd application to the trash (do not worry your passwords will not be deleted as they are stored in a separate keychain file)
Empty the trash
Launch Safari and make sure the 1Passwd icon is gone
Download the latest version of 1Passwd here:
Drag the 1Passwd icon in the Disk Image to the Applications folder
Launch 1Passwd and use "Install All" to install the extensions
If all of this does not get the 1Passwd icon in Firefox, consider switching to Safari. :) Just kidding! (and seeing if you read all the way down here)
