On iPhone Security

Gizmodo today reported about an easy way to access the Address Book, Mail, and Safari even if you turned on the Passcode Lock.

The trick is quite clever — press the "Emergency Call" button and then double-tap on the Home button to show the list of favorites in the Address Book. Through the address book record it is possible to launch Mail or Safari, without entering the Passcode.

It is just one of many reasons to use a program like 1Password to make sure the sensitive information on your iPhone is encrypted.

BA92EB36-78C5-445B-9463-6065B0E47986.jpg We have been really busy around here with the new iPhone/iPod touch version of 1Password. Overall things have gone as smooth as one could expect for a new product on a new device. Unfortunately, we have found some serious issues that need the be addressed.

The most serious issue involves the OS X Keychain Service and how it detects if an application is allowed to access an item in a keychain.

Rich Mogull Recommends 1Password on MacVoices

I was listening to MacVoices today and was delighted to hear 1Password recommended as a solution to help users better protect themselves.

In show #8111 Chuck Joiner discussed Mac Security and the recent Black Hat conference with Rich Mogull, the host of the Network Security Podcast.

From the show description:

Rich Mogull discusses some of the security issues that came to light at the recent Black Hat and DEFCON conferences in Las Vegas. Rich walks us through why even Mac users need to be concerned with security in the browser, in Google Widgets and Google Gears, and even when using your favorite social network. Rich explains that even he got hacked by a social engineering trick at the conference, covers how malicious code can be hidden almost anywhere, even in an image file and more. Most important, Rich helps us understand the DNS vulnerabilities that were the talk of the conferences, and reveals a simple precaution that any Mac user can take to protect themselves.

I was very proud to hear Rich mention 1Password as his first item when answering Chuck's question about how users can better protect themselves. Chuck asks this question near the 17:30 mark.

You can subscribe to MacVoices in iTunes here.

Thanks for the great show Chuck!

1Password Now Available in App Store!

1Password was accepted into the App Store early Tuesday morning and the flood gates were opened! Email and forum posts just poured in for the first 48 hours and while things have calmed down a bit the mail is 300% higher than normal still.

On Tuesday we set a new record for the most users online in our forum with 1,071 people coming to learn about the new application. These users posted over a 1000 posts along with almost 1000 direct emails.

Needless to say, it has been a crazy week here at Agile! Our main Customer Support specialists Gita, Carl are doing a fantastic job, and the rest of the team has been pitching in as much as possible while still trying to update web sites, 1Password versions, and everything else that needed to be done despite the ongoing Tsunami.

Thankfully we all had a lot of BrainToniq to keep us going :)
