We've had several users request 1Password actions for NetworkLocation so that they can adjust their 1Password settings based on where they are or what network they connect to. Today I'm pleased to announce the availability of the 1Password plugin for NetworkLocation. This is available as a free download from the NetworkLocation website. (Scroll to the bottom and click "Extras" on the right hand side.)
NetworkLocation from the guys at Centrix.ca is a great application for managing settings on your computer depending on the network or Wi-Fi hotspot you're connected to. As of version 3.0, NetworkLocation also includes SkyHook support so you can automatically change your settings based on your geographic location, and not just by the ID of the network you're connected to.
Here is an example of how useful NetworkLocation and 1Password can be together: When you bring your MacBook into work, NetworkLocation can automatically turn off your system volume, change your default printer, turn on the password setting for your screensaver, and—thanks to our new plugin—lock your 1Password keychain or even reduce the amount of time for the auto-lock. When you return home, NetworkLocation can turn off all those settings, unlock your keychain and let you work more freely.
In order to use the 1Password NetworkLocation plugin, you need to be running 1Password 2.9.17 or higher and NetworkLocation 3.0.6 or higher. To install the plugin, just double-click it and NetworkLocation will take care of installing the plugin for you. At this point, you should be able to add 1Password actions to your locations. Click the plus button and navigate to Plugins to find the available actions.
There are two actions with this plugin. The first is a simple action to lock the 1Password keychain when entering a location. (If it is already locked, the action does nothing.) This action is available to all 1Password users. The second action requires the Agile Keychain and allows for more fine-grained control of when 1Password automatically locks including on inactivity, sleep, and screen saver. We've modeled the NetworkLocation settings after the 1Password keychain preferences (1Password > Preferences > Keychain) so any 1Password user should be familiar with the plugin's settings.
We hope you enjoy the 1Password plugin for NetworkLocation. We welcome your feedback in the comments here or in our support forums.
