1Password 2.7 Release Adds Instant Logins

HUD_perspective.png

1Password 2.7 is out and its sure to turn some heads with its sexy new Bookmarks HUD (Heads Up Display) window that we've added directly within the browser. The Bookmarks window has been in the works for over a year and has been the #1 requested feature by users for a long time now and we nailed it in this release! You can see a preview of this new window on the right side of this post.

With the new Bookmarks feature, you can now use one key combination or mouse click to navigate to a web site, fill in the login details, and submit the form.

This is a free upgrade for all paid customers. The quickest and easiest way to upgrade is to select Check For Updates from the main 1Password menu, as shown in this screenshot.

Give the new release a spin and be sure to tell us what you think in the comments and in the forum.

More 1Password Icon Pilfering

skitched-20080627-141620.png

It has been interesting to watch the 1Password icon popup in the strangest places on the Internet. So far 1Password has not been as "privileged" to have its icon ripped off as many times as Panic's Transmit has been, but we might catch up as people are finding creative ways to (illegally) use the 1Password icon.

Dave Batton from Mere Mortal Software dropped me a note showing that 1Password's icon is being used on Erico Motorsports website as an icon for their Scooters (I'm purposely not linking as they don't deserve the extra Google juice).

Leopard Code Signing and Keychain Problems

OS X 10.5 Leopard brings a new Code Signing security feature that helps verify the integrity of an application. Applications are signed by their creators before being distributed using their private key, and then can be verified on the customer's machine using the companies public key.

The OS X Keychain Services leverage this new Code Signing feature to verify the signature of each application before it will allow access to the contents of the keychain. By verifying the signature, the OS X Keychain Services can detect when a potentially malicious change has been made to an application and thereby protect your sensitive data by denying the changed application access.

Since the upgrade to Leopard, many 1Password users have written in to mention that they cannot access their data, usually from within Safari. At first we were confused why the keychain data could not be accessed from within Safari, yet it was accessible from other browsers and the 1Password application.

Fixing Duplicated Keychain Entries in 1Password in .Mac

When upgrading to 1Password version 2.5, we have have several reports from .Mac members that the new 1Password keychain has all of its contents duplicated. For instance, a 1Passwd keychain from version 2.4 containing 400 items would end up having 800 items, or even 1200 items in the new 1Password keychain in version 2.5.

This issue is being caused by how .Mac is performing the sync process. From what we can tell, there are two causes of the duplication.

1Password on Leopard

We recently announced that 1Password 2.5 added Leopard support. In 1Password 2.5 we tested with the latest developer build given to us by Apple, but the final retail version of Leopard changed things and many browsers stopped working.

We just released 1Password 2.5.1 which should now have full Leopard support. It has worked for many people so far, but sadly there are a few users still experiencing problem. We are still looking into perfecting things, but if you are on Leopard and want to give it a go, you can upgrade to version 2.5.1 by using the Check For Updates feature of 1Password, as shown here:

Five Google Calendar Tips for iCal Users

I have been a heavy iCal user ever since I first purchased the PowerBook G4 and I still open it every day. However, after Merlin Mann mentioned how much he liked the Google Calendar in one of the recent MacBreak Weekly podcasts, I decided to give the online service a try.

Here is a few tips I found in the first few weeks:

1. Use Keyboard shortcuts

You will be surprised to find that navigating and editing Google Calendar entries in the web browser can be faster than using a native desktop application. For example, press "d/w/m" to switch between Day/Week/Month view, "n/p" to navigate to next or previous Day/Week/Month, "t" to jump to Today and "c" to create a new event.

  • Again, I think this is a great product. It really gives me peace of mind knowing that my passwords are all protected so that if either one of my computers were stolen, I'd be in good shape. (Bob B.)
