In the News: 1Password is CNET's Editor's Choice, recommended by NPR twice

1Password recently received some big-league endorsements from CNET and NPR, so we thought it would be only proper to collect the cliff notes for you about the kind words they had to say.

CNET_Editors_Choice_April_09.gifFirst, Jason Parker picked 1Password for CNET's Editors' Choice Award last month, and you can see why:

Everyone who uses the Web for awhile knows that login information starts to pile up quickly. With online e-mail accounts, login information for online banking, and countless forums, most users start to use the same passwords for everything. It's pretty easy to see how this is a bad security practice [...] 1Password is the best software available to keep your logins secure without having to remember tons of passwords.

The Agile Web Solutions team is honored, and we thank CNET for bestowing an Editors' Choice Award on 1Password!

Next are two (count 'em: two!) 1Password endorsements from National Public Radio (NPR). In an article titled You Need Better p@s5W0rD$!, technology journalist Omar Gallaga recommends 1Password for storing and using your passwords online. Wisely, he also recommends using passwords that are at least eight characters and include a combination of letters (both lower and upper-case), symbols, and numbers.

password_code_magnifying_glass.jpgThe NPR's second hat-tip to 1Password appears on the May 19th episode of All Tech Considered, where host Michele Norris tackles "The Search For The Perfect Password." Norris opens the show with a few "password predicament" anecdotes from real people on the street. But as 1Password's users know all too well, these might as well have been called "password horror stories."

"My name is Cherry Brownlee," began one of these many password horror story predicaments. "I have so many passwords, I can’t keep track of them. I have a company, and I have to call the person in charge of accounting to keep track of all of our passwords on our various accounts. It’s one of the curses of technology."

Norris continued her segment by asking Omar Gallaga: "Why do we need so many passwords? Why can’t we have something like a universal remote, one password that we can use for everything?"

We'll give you three guesses as to what Gallaga recommended to solve this 21st century conundrum.

"The last thing you want to do to use the same password as your login name, to use family information like your date of birth or, you know, birth of your kids as passwords, or to write down your password on a Post-it note and stick it on your desk. I know everybody does that, but that’s another way to drive your IT department crazy."

"I’ve been using a program called 1Password, [...] which keeps all of my passwords remembered and is easily accessible in the Web browser." Gallaga is also a fan of 1Password's little brother: "And one reason I really like it is that there’s also an iPhone version of it that transfers all of my passwords to my phone. So if I’m accessing Web sites on the go, it has the same passwords as my desktop." Gallaga's right: 1Password touch for iPhone and iPod touch (a free-for-a-limited-time download from the App Store) is a secure, convenient way to never be without your Logins, personal information, secure notes, and credit card numbers.

We're overjoyed to receive such great 1Password praise from these esteemed outlets. Thanks CNET and NPR!

1Password in the News

1Password has been in the news a lot this week!

Just last night while I was listening to the Mac Geek Gab PodCast episode #173, 1Password popped up in the conversation about how to setup a brand new Mac.

The Mac Geek Gab PodCast discussion was focused on the new Macbooks and was very timely for me as my new MacBook Pro just arrived. I decided to not migrate my existing preferences, instead electing to start fresh and manually create everything. I was in the middle of configuring Mail when Dave Hamilton gave some great advice on setting things up when going this route.

Fantastic!!

After discussing how to migrate your Mail and Keychains from your old setup to your new Mac, Dave brought up 1Password. I was ecstatic to hear this:

Might I recommend, and they don't pay us to say this but I'm happy to say it anyway, 1Password from Agile Solutions. it is a fantastic, WAY better than the keychain for web passwords.

It is fantastic!

It is such an awesome utility for managing your passwords, it is cross browser compliant, it will generate strong passwords and all that great stuff.

Allows you to easily have different passwords for every single web site that you visit.

That's it, I'm done my endorsement of 1Password

Thank you Dave! I'm glad to hear you find 1Password awesome! And thank you for the advice on migrating Mail, it saved me at least an hour as I was planning a different route!

Awesome!!

Mac|Life Editor picks 1Password

Speaking of awesome, MacLife reviewed 1Password in the November Edition and assigned 1Password a ranking of AWESOME (5/5) and then proceeded to award 1Password with an Editors' Choice award!!

This is a huge honor and I want to thank Ray Aguilera for the kind words and writing such an excellent article.

Ray did raise two Cons, however, namely that 1Password is Mac only and the iPhone version is currently a bit limited. We could not agree more and are taking steps to address both of these concerns.

Update: MacLife posted their review online.

Native iPhone App 1.0 hits the App Store

1Password in iTunes App StoreI just love that part in the the movie The Jerk where Steve Martin is running around hysterically yelling "the new phone books are here!"

That's a bit of what it was like this morning when Apple released 1Password for iPhone 1.0 to the App Store. We had over 1000 people live on the forums which is the highest number ever on at one time. (for now)

See this forum thread for a list of current issues that we are working though.

We'll post more when we can get a breath. :)

Thanks

From the YML site:

What's your password? It's a question we get "asked" constantly while using the Internet. Most of us have fairly simple to remember passwords and we often use the same password for multiple web sites/situations. Agile Web Solutions makes 1Password and their Chief Evangelist will be on tonight's show to talk about how it can not only create strong passwords and remember them for you, it can also prevent phishing, auto-fill forms, sync with .Mac and much more.

Come join us!

After you finished in the store, stop by the forums and wish Dave a Happy Birthday. Did someone say roast? :)

Happy Birthday, Dave!

1Password coming to the literary world

It is amazing the things we learn about from 1Password. On a daily basis we correspond with people from all walks of life. People from countries all over the world and from just about every industry and background you can imagine. I remember a few months back talking with someone who was using 1Password in the relief effort in Darfur. I was just fascinated by the thought of our software being used in those conditions. I have heard stories from a lot of other people as well and sometimes they cause diversions as I check their stuff out as was the case with the custom motorcycle builder awhile back. Most recently I corresponded with a Vietnam-era helicopter pilot and learned some interesting things. So when Carolyn Wilma (the Contest Queen) approached us several months ago about her contesting book it certainly was par for the course. She was interested in the use of 1Password for entering contests and sweepstakes and her upcoming book is now available for pre-order.

You can pre-order the U.S. edition of the book You Can't Win If You Don't Enter! using by clicking here.

There is a short section on 1Password in the book that yours truly helped on.

I hope it is wildly successful unlike my book entitled How I turned 10 million dollars in real estate into $50 cash. Still not sure why that one didn't get more audience. Tough crowd out there. :)
