A potential solution to keep 1Password's button in Safari 4's toolbar

We've had a few reports that, after updating to Safari 4, our 1Password button may refuse to stay in the toolbar. We aren't quite sure of the scope of the problem yet, but we think we have a potential solution.

Part of the problem may simply be due to changes that Apple made to Safari's toolbar, and we're looking into this. If you use Evernote, there is also a bug in its Safari button that causes 1Password (and others, such as TabExpose) to get knocked out of the toolbar each time Safari is started.

Evernote told us that this is a high priority bug they're looking into. In the interim, we have a solution that might help users to get back their toolbar buttons for 1Password and other apps.

Below is a command that you can copy and paste into Terminal (found in /Applicatons/Utilities) to reset your Safari 4 toolbar. This should reset it back to Apple's default arrangement of back/forward buttons, the address bar, and Google search box. Quit Safari, then paste this into Terminal and hit return:

defaults delete com.apple.safari "NSToolbar Configuration BrowserWindowToolbarIdentifier"

If it works, the only confirmation you will see is a prompt for a new command (this is Terminal's way of saying "Thank you, sir, may I please have s'more?"). Restart Safari, and you should see the default button arrangement (Evernote users will see its button added automatically). To get 1Password and any other buttons back, select View > Customize Toolbar to display a sheet of all available buttons. Drag the ones you want to the toolbar, click "Done," and they should now stick between Safari sessions.

Of course, let us know here if this solution works for you (or if it doesn't), and we'll keep looking into the issue.

Firefox: Where's my 1Password Icon?

One of the great things about 1Passwd is the multi-browser support. While I'm content to use Safari others have chosen Firefox, Camino, Flock, or Omniweb as their browser of choice. Lately we've received a bit of e-mail regarding the 1Passwd icon not being installed in Firefox and there does not appear to be one single solution for all cases. Therefore, I thought I would do a knowledge "dump" on the subject and cover all them here. So here is a list of solutions for getting the 1Passwd icon in added to Firefox.

1. Although 1Passwd works with Firefox 1.5 and later, we highly recommend that you use the most current version of Firefox. As it stands today the latest version of Firefox is 2.0.0.6. (Get Firefox Here)

Fix Available for 1Passwd in DEVONagent

Eric from DEVONtechnologies contacted us to let us know a DEVONagent 2.2 customer had been experiencing a crash, and that they suspected it might be related to 1Passwd. After some digging Roustem found it was indeed coming from 1Passwd, and created a new build that fixes the issue.

Those using DEVONagent should upgrade to the latest build linked to in this forum thread. For those who haven't tried DEVONagent, I recommend you give it a whirl, it has many great features to help you organize your research while browsing the web, and intergates flawlessly with DEVONthink.

Creating New Profiles in Firefox and Flock

It's funny how support questions tend to group together.

Yesterday I wrote a tutorial on how to kick-start keychain syncing with .Mac after 3 .Mac related questions were asked this week alone.

Now today we have had 2 Flock install related questions come in, so I figured I'd write this tutorial before the 3rd question arrives :)

If 1Passwd ever fails to install its toolbar into Flock or Firefox, it is most likely that your Firefox/Flock profile was created (or migrated from) an older version of Firefox that had a bug when assigning folder names. Let me explain.

dotMac Syncing Howto: Forcing Keychains to Sync

.Mac is fickle sometimes. In just this week alone we've had 3 customers report problems syncing their keychain with .Mac accounts. So, I thought I'd share a little tutorial on the first step I always try when .Mac gets out-of-sync: Manually reset your .Mac keychain data with the correct data.

When .Mac refuses to sync, sometimes it just needs a little coaxing. The following steps will force .Mac to update its data to keychain from your one Mac and force .Mac to update the keychains on your other Mac.

As always, the first step before any change is to backup your information. The keychains are stored in this folder:

/Users/your-user-id/Library/Keychains

Back that folder up on both your machines.
